…humans are never able to state just what is pornography. Even the august United States Supreme Court cannot speak of it clearly. As Heraclitus also said, omens and oracular mysteries do not speak clearly; they give only signs because “nature loves to hide.”
Even if arousal and erection speak loud and clear, the epiphanic nature of the arousal remains mysterious, rising as it does from a bed of images. That’s why sexual imagery plays such a vivid role in mystery cults and why sexual imagery fertilizes creativity (by which I mean any originating impulse).
Arousal is at the origin of life and like all origins is fundamentally concealed from the clarity of understanding. We can never know how anything started. All beginnings are fantasies … maybe, even, sexual fantasies. Am I saying that the world begins in pornography?
