The archetypal reductions such as we have all been doing in our writings on Pan, Demeter, Athene, Hermes, etc., cannot be taken literally as establishing what belongs to what. What must be taken literally, however, is the maxim “stick to the image.”
This means not to lead the image into archetypes and myths but to enter the image by means of archetypes and myths. Myths become ways of seeing the image; they are perspectives toward it rather than facts of it or contents in it.
